Many people have lived experiences from which the rest of us could learn, and act upon, but all to often their knowledge dies with them. David Brokensha's memoir is an important exception. Brokensha, now 84, was a young soldier in WW2, a prisoner of war, a student at three universities, a colonial administrator, a founder of a public-policy orientated NGO, a professor of anthropology, and a South African exile who returned home in 1999. This fascinating memoir not only follows Brokensha's long and productive life, it also demonstrates, in a lively and highly readable fashion, how anthropological field research can generate benefits in a way that desk-based theories usually do not. As a perhaps-unintended result, it describes, too, how these benefits accrue to the researcher as well as to the 'subjects' of his research. David Brokensha and his life-companion Bernard Riley lived and worked together-and apart- in Africa, the USA and the UK for nearly fifty years; the book is also the story of their love.

Good. No Jacket. Inscribed by Author(s)The author has inscribed and dated (Dec 2007) the frontispage. This copy is in robust condition. The bottom left front portion has been crushed during storage/ packing and has buckled that corner area. It has also resulted in some separation from the spine at the inside front cover. There is also some resultant imbalance in the binding. The spine has user creases. The paper trim edges are slightly marked from usage. However, inside, the condition is very good throughout. The pages are fresh and bright, youthful and clear. The colour illustrations in particular are vivid. All pages are in pleasing condition. fk.
