All these figures added together reach just upon 139 tons. The engine in its complete state represents a weight of only one-third of this. CHAPTER X. HOW THE SLIDE-VALVES ARE SET. After the connecting-rods and valve-gear are put up, the process of "setting the valves " is gone through. This is an important duty, and should only be entrusted to a careful and experienced man. As already explained, the admission of steam to the cylinders is controlled by the size of the valve and ports, the lead given, and the throw of the eccentric; but although these may all be correctly calculated and properly constructed, great care is necessary in fitting up the gear to see that the valve is so placed in the steam-chest as to afford an equal distribution of steam to each end of the cylinder. If the eccentric-rod or valve spindle are not exactly of the right length, the steam admission is greater at one end of the cylinder than at the other, and "setting the valves" is the term used to describe the operation by which the correct length of the valve spindle is determined, and the equal distribution of steam at each end of the cylinder ensured. j There are two ways of setting the valves--(1) By equalizing the "lead" when the crank is at the extreme end of each stroke. (2) By equalizing the full opening of the valve for steam admission at each end of the travel of the valve, without taking into consideration t...
