Andy Williams' two LP releases of 1967 are combined on this two-fer CD reissue. Williams was one of the 1960s' most popular male vocalists, basing his appeal on his long-running television show and his knack for singing romantic movie theme songs. He was well-established by 1967, but also trying to maintain his position by incorporating elements of the changing pop scene into his sound. So, while this collection contains many songs from '60s movies -- "Born Free," "Alfie," "Somewhere, My Love" (Dr. Zhivago), "Strangers in the Night" (A Man Could Get Killed), "The Look of Love" (Casino Royale), "When I Look in Your Eyes" (Doctor Doolittle), and "I Will Wait for You" and "Watch What Happens" (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg) -- it also finds Williams covering the songs of pop/rock groups like the Monkees ("I Want to Be Free") and the Beach Boys ("God Only Knows"). Another major source of material is the hits of other pop performers such as Al Martino ("Spanish Eyes") and Frank Sinatra ("Strangers in the Night," "Somethin' Stupid"). And there are even a couple of Williams' own hits, the pop Top 40 "Music to Watch Girls By" and the easy listening Top Five "Holly." The singer's attempt to balance differing styles and incorporate them all within his familiar ballad sound was successful at the time -- both albums reached the Top Ten and went gold -- and it remains so decades later, making for an excellent collection of some of the more melodic music of the mid-'60s. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi
