The scariest book I have ever read ..
I?m not really into this genre, mainly because these tales of woe tend to portray the same old, same old ? a hapless victim running around like a headless chicken, whilst some unholy force insists on doing their evil bidding from a physical, rather than a psychological, perspective to overcome the victim. For what reason or purpose? Usually we never find out.
The end result means that, what actually starts off as a promising, credible and believable story, metamorphosis?s into some kind of over-dramatised and over-sensationalised pile of disappointing pooh!
Which brings me onto the book I?m reviewing?
Not being a fan of supernatural horror (had you guessed?) I naturally approached this book with a reverence of scepticism. But, as it came highly recommended, I felt I should do the honourable thing and, at the very least, read the first couple of chapters, just to say I?d tried but it wasn?t for me.
Trouble is, I was so drawn into this story that I ended up reading the lot. It is without doubt written in a way that approaches the supernatural world from a viewpoint I would never have dreamed possible. The victim in this book was, quite refreshingly, a world away from those usually depicted in stories like these. Our heroine had a strength and courage about her rarely seen in this synario. She remained focused despite some terrible obstacles put in her path and rose to any challenge with vigour, no matter how obscure things seemed to her at the time. She had an endearing innocent wisdom about her so it was really easy for the reader to get on her side and root for her salvation. Yes, from being raped by her possessed husband, to the final exorcism (I won?t spoil your fun and spill the beans, but it?s a real humdinger of a twist that no one could ever have seen coming), there was nothing that could take the fight out of her. She was one brave lady. If it had been me, I would have moved out of the house as quickly as I had moved in.
This novel is extremely deep, dark, and approaches the supernatural world from the psychological, rather than the usual physical perspective. There are a lot of references to the Bible, Biblical characters and Christianity generally, as well as being heavily influenced by the occult world, but don?t let any of that put you off reading the book. Without those references there would be no story to tell.
If anything, this book is a fine example of how the strength of ones Faith can overcome most anything. They say God only gives us as much as we can cope with and, to an extent, I believe this to be true. That said, if the Christian?s were ever to get wind of this book, they would do their utmost to GET IT BANNED.
