The book is about literary and artistic London in the 1900s, and the area of London covered is Chelsea, Soho, and Hampstead. It is a long discourse and a guide to Bohemian London in the early twentieth century, between the eras of Enoch Soames and Ezra Pound. At 22 Ransome had moved to London, and while living in Chelsea was solicited by a young woman literary agent to write "a book on Bohemia in London, an essayistic al sort of book, putting Bohemia of today against a background of the past", which he promptly did. It was published by Chapman and Hall in late September 1907 and put out by Dodd Mead in NY. An absolutely charmed cultural period piece. Ships from Dinkytown in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

I have loved Swallows and Amazons since a child, this was Arther Ransomes first book. It shows what an enthusiastic young man he was and makes one want to go directly up to London to see how the places he describes are now.
I happen to love Arthur Ransome, if you do too, read this book, if not, give it a go.
