Boarding School is a novel that reveals a heart-wrenching yet poignant story that demonstrates how the very essence of a young personas character can be challenged in such institutions. This is above all a bold story of loyalty and friendship which prevails despite a secluded world of physical, drug and sexual abuse. The author takes the reader through a one-year time period which begins in the swimming pool in his parentsa backyard in Denver and ends in a seedy one-room apartment on the lower east side of Manhattan. In the end this story stands as a unique example of the indomitable spirit which resides within us all and the reader is shown how, despite crushing odds, a boy can rise above the adversities inflicted upon him by others to become the person he chooses to be. The reader will be moved and inspired by this book and the parent will be informed in ways never before explained as to what it takes to avoid an accidental placement of his/her child into the charge of strangers who may at best be cavalier where the interests of the young person are concerned. Boarding School is a must-read for all who care for or are concerned about the welfare of children and for those who have suffered setbacks in their own lives which they wish to overcome.

As a victim of "boarding school", I purchased this book with more than a little personal expectation. The book is a shocker and hardly credible had it not been that my own experiences in boarding school (although nothing like as appalling as what Clint experienced) made me realize that this really could happen. A common thread that I shared with Clint was the inability to communicate with any outside source. We were isolated and our mail was strictly censored. The book should be a flashing red light for parents who commit their children to the care of others. My own appeal to parents is: Listen to what your children say when and if they have opportunity to communicate. Ours did not or if they did, they apparently did not believe us since they did nothing about it. The courage of the protagonists and their ability to survive is gripping. The sad reality is that many real life stories do not have happy endings. This is a powerful book, well written, thought provoking and a must for those who care about kids.
