There are continuous efforts to develop new hemostatic agents with various delivery mechanisms for treating severe hemorrhage. These include self-propelling particles, hydrophobically modified chitosan gauze, injectable and in situ forming gels, and self-expanding foams. Given the safety concerns with some currently used hemostatic materials, more efficient and safer hemostatic agents are still needed.
