Marvin O'Connell has done a terrific job in making accessible the life of one of the 17th centuries most important writers, and one of history's greatest minds. Whether one knows Pascal from science, mathematics, literature, religion, or philosophy, having O'Connell as a guide is a valuable resource. This relatively brief survey of a very controversial and truly interesting history brings one to want to read more on Pascal while providing a very strong base on which to build one's understanding. With the many facets of Pascal's life and work, O'Connell's central focus is also that which was central to Pascal's life (or at least the majority of it): religion. If one is solely interested in Pascal the scientist, this may not be the best book. But for those who are interested in learning about Pascal the man, O'Connell's book is a great read.
