SYNOPSIS: When Blair Fraser died in May 1968 people all across Canada felt a sense of shock and loss. In his twenty-four years with Maclean's Magazine Fraser had become one of Canada's best-known and most highly respected political journalists. His hundreds of articles for Maclean's, his frequent broadcasts for the C.B.C., and his clear and direct style had made him a national figure. For the many people who knew him personally there was, added to the concern, insight, and sheer hard work he put into his writings, the warmth and strength of his personality. Blair Fraser was continually fascinated by the Canadian political process, and he was happiest when he was writing about it from its centre, Ottawa. In addition, the years he lived in Montreal had given him a particular feeling for the people of Quebec and their problems, and he wrote about them with a warm understanding long before the subject became politically fashionable. Above all, there was his love for the land itself, strongly reinforced by the annual canoe trips he made as a part of a group that retraced the paths of many of the country's early explorers. In later years he travelled frequently to the trouble-spots of the world, and to his reports from abroad he brought an informed and an inquiring mind, as well as a distinctly Canadian point of view. All these facets of his work and more are reflected in the articles selected by his two sons for this volume. Graham Fraser has written a brief biographical introduction that is a moving tribute to his father. John Fraser was born in Montreal and is a graduate of McGill University and of Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. A former editor-in-chief of the McGill Daily, he joined the Department of External Affairs in 1958 as a Foreign Service Officer. He has served in Belgrade, Hong Kong, and Warsaw as well as in Ottawa. Graham Fraser was born in Ottawa and educated at Upper Canada College, Toronto, and at the University of Toronto, where he was editor of the Varsity Review. He has written articles for a number of Canadian periodicals and is currently a reporter for the Toronto Star.
