I only bought this book because I am interested in birds, and particulary the birds of the Western palearctic - and besides field ornithology/birdwatching also is a dedicated bird book collector.
The book was issued in 1988, and the layout differs from what is common today. The plates are placed in the middle of the book, the describing text varies a lot - due to the fact that this book in general refers to A Field Guide to the Birds of Britain and Europe, by Peterson, Mountford and Hollom, 4th ed 1983. About two thirds of the species have distribution maps.
The plate quality is variable, due to the fact that species are presented in various scales on the same plate. Some species are only shown in filght etc.
The book has a thorough reference list for further reading, a check list for the area covered and separate engilsh and scientific indexes.
In 2010, this must be read as a historic document, certainly with the qualities of its own period.
My second-hand (library !) copy is definately worth a place in my bookshelf
