Anne Lamott delivers much-needed advice, practice, and motivation to beginning writers, bored writers, depressed writers, uninterested writers (and pretty much every other kind too!) in a way that is entertaining and much easier to understand than your average English textbook. In addition, it lives up to the second part of the title, "Some Instructions On Writing and Life" by also applying said encouragement and wisdom to life with an abundance of funny and touching examples.
