Intentionally or not, Ed Hamell subverted traditional notions of what a singer/songwriter could be with his major-label debut. Like his future tourmate (and fellow upstate New York native) Ani Difranco, Hamell combined the best elements of the one-man-band storytelling tradition with an aggressive, hyper-rhythmic acoustic guitar attack that absolutely demanded attention. Actually, he employs two distinct approaches on Big as Life: High-energy shouts like Sugarfree have him spitting out words over bluesy, lightning-speed instrumental figures, while slower, more narrative-based pieces like Blood of the Wolf (a riveting account of a childhood friend that reveals Hamell's sharp eye for detail) and Big as Life (a brilliantly constructed plea for racial unity) approach spoken-word status. But even the harshest tracks, instrumentally speaking, have a tenderness and poetry to them: Harmony sounds positively brutal until you listen closely enough to realize he's singing about the redemptive power of a happy romantic relationship. Throughout, Hamell seems awfully eager to keep people listening, as if he's still coming to terms with his identity as an artist -- but that only adds to the charm of an album as adventurous as Big as Life. ~ Kenneth Bays, Rovi
