There's a lot wrong with this book, starting with the title. The source of Lucas O?Reilly's wealth is his (shared) gold mine; his status comes from Lucas? roles as founder and mayor of Thunder Canyon. In conversation, Luc's place is referred to as a ?farm.?
Lucas has just about everything he wants in life except a wife so he pays a fee to an agency to find one (meeting his specifications) and send her to his home in Montana. Miss Jennifer Alston is the woman who has just arrived in Thunder Canyon, ready to meet and marry her intended.
Unfortunately, the agency has enhanced Jennifer's skills dramatically. She does not know how to cook or mend clothes ? the 2 specific skills Luc tells the agency he wants.
Jennifer is dismayed to find that her future husband is not a gentleman and he's allowed the farmhouse to devolve into a pig sty. She wants to back out of the agreement but Luc is having none of it.
Jennifer decides that if she is going to do housework, she might as well get paid for it. She gets together with Ida, a widow, and they open a boardinghouse. She moves out of Luc's home. I'm not going to tell the rest; you probably wouldn't believe me anyway. This is one strange story.
Would I recommend this book? No, it's too far-fetched to be realistic. I've read most of the rest of Carolyn Davidson's catalog and this story is not indicative of her talent. 2.5 stars
