The first step in their journey was a steamer ride to Montreal, where they arrived one evening about seven o'clock, after a glorious sail down the St. Lawrence and an exciting dash through the Lachine Rapids. The next morning the children were up bright and early, and when Mr. Butler suggested that they should take a carriage drive around the city, and then climb to the top of Mount Royal, they declared that they were ready for anything. Archie took a note-book from his pocket, and as they drove up and down the streets he made a note of the important places which the driver pointed out. Betty and Reggie made fun of him, and declared he spent so much time writing that he didn't have a chance to see half as much as they did. Later, when Reggie was trying to translate some of the French signs, and Betty was so busy helping him that neither one saw the tablet which marks the spot where Cartier found the Indian village of Hochelaga, it was Archie's turn to laugh. After an hour's ride around the city, the driver turned into the entrance to Mount Royal Park, which is one of the finest parks in America. The road, bordered by beautiful shade trees, wound in and out until it reached the summit of the mountain which gives the city its name. Cartier climbed this very same mountain with an Indian guide. When he saw the magnificent view of woods and plain and river, he named it Mount Royal. And Mount Royal, or, as he pronounced it, Mont Real, it is to-day. Near the top of the mountain the children left the carriage and followed a little footpath to the "outlook platform," where there is a superb view.
