More than a few best-of compilations by Jimmy Reed by have been released over the years. This particular release came out in 1990 as part of JCI's poorly assembled Masters of the Blues series, for which the small, L.A.-based label dug into the Chess or Vee-Jay vaults and released CDs by John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Etta James and others. The packaging and liner notes on The Best of Jimmy Reed are embarassing -- neither exact recording dates nor personnel are listed -- although the selections are first rate. From "Bright Lights, Big City" and "Big Boss Man" to "Pretty Thing," "Honest I Do" and "Baby, What You Want Me To Do," most of Reed's essential Vee-Jay hits are here. Everything on this 18-song CD illustrates just how charismatic and distinctive a bluesman Reed was, but sadly, the sound quality is far from ideal -- digital remastering was never JCI's strong point. Between the sound and the packaging, JCI should have been ashamed. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi
