Whoa, whoa -- hold it there, buddy! Calling an album "Best of Blue Öyster Cult" and not including any renowned studio versions of the group's '70s classics -- just live takes? Whoa, whoa -- hold it there, buddy! Calling an album "Best of Blue Öyster Cult" and not including any renowned studio versions of the group's '70s classics -- just live takes? And rounding out the set with a handful of latter day studio tracks? Well, I don't know about you, but this certainly does not add up to be a true "best-of" set, dear friends. But that's exactly what you get with 2006's Best of Blue Öyster Cult. Longtime fans could probably have detected that something was fishy when it was not the BÖC's longtime label, CBS, issuing the set (and which owns all the best-known studio versions of the group's classics). Nonetheless, you get respectable live renditions of such classic rock radio standards as "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," "Godzilla," and "Burnin' for You," as well as such early gems as "Stairway to the Stars" and "Cities on Flame with Rock n' Roll" -- plus such modern-day studio cuts as "Good to Feel Hungry." Still, for newcomers looking for a true "Best of Blue Öyster Cult," you're going to have to look elsewhere (which shouldn't be too hard, as BÖC has probably the most best-of compilations issued over the years than any other bloody rock band!). ~ Greg Prato, Rovi
