Know how you read through an anthology of short stories, hoping to find one you like? Well, I read through this book without finding any I liked. The problem is the criteria for selection. The stories here look like the output of pampered darlings from Creative Writing classes, chosen so as to be diverse rather than good. Good stories touch you in some way, make you connect with a character. These stories alienate you--they are exercises in style. The editor has evidently attempted to find diversity. Well, he found it by choosing stories with exaggerated situations and unbelievable characters. Fancy writing here and there, too. Ooh, so arty! Good, no. Best of the best, no. Best, no. Just pretentious.
