This is better than later installments in this series. The problem with these anthologies is two-fold. One, that the editor attempts to get a diverse assemblage of writers and situations. Good, yes? Actually, no. The reader is likely to find most of the plots foreign to what he knows, and thus little empathic connection between the reader and most stories occurs. The other problem is that writers are encouraged to show off their fancy writing skills, the kind of prose that got good grades in Creative Writing classes. Once again, the reader doesn't relate to prettified prose, and cannot emphathize with such writing. Most effective writing is really rather simple, let's keep it that way, and let humanity and psychological insight win out over cleverness and wordsmithing. This volume is better than later ones in the series. Avoid the Labonte-edited volumes.
