I was interested in the coming of age story of two friends when I purchased this book for a fun read on vacation. It turned out to be anything but a fun read. The more I got to know the characters, the less I liked them. Pretty much every character in the book was plagued at some point by questionable if not morrally corrupt behavior. The only fun part was to predict what horrible behavior would surface next, but I was never right so that wasn't fun either.
Some examples of the behavior are murder, drug abuse, drug trafficking, possible suicide, adultery, and pornography. The homosexuality didn't bother me until he started posing as a heterosexual just to please his parents. Ok, I lied. It bothered me when the homosexual brother had an affair with her sister's husband.
The more I read, the more I kept hoping that something would happen to endear any of the characters in this book to me. Honestly, the author never even did a good job of making me believe these girls were really "Best Friends."

Not the best "friends" book
I was excited when my book club chose this book despite its length, but I was ultimately disappointed by the writing style and the characters. While the concept of two college roommates bonding, despite differences was intriguing, it's not unique. There were a few interesting twists and turns, but when I was finished, I had a feeling of "that's it?".
