The reading of An American in Paris here by conductor James Judd and the National Orchestral Institute Philharmonic is not the first recording of the new critical edition of An American in Paris from the University of Michigan, but such recordings are still rare, and those who haven't heard this music are heartily advised to take this budget-priced chance to check it out: it is a major rehearing of An American in Paris. Much has been made of the taxi horns, which do not sound the pitches hearers will be used to. Gershwin labeled the horns A, B, C, and D in the score, which later editors interpreted as pitch names, but a 1929 recording shows that they were mere labels and that the horns sound different notes, and quite dissonant ones.
