This is Shirer's first-hand account as he watched with increased fascination and horror as Europe plunged madly down the road to Armageddon in the last half of the 1930s. Shirer spent many years in close proximity to Hitler, witnessing first hand the brutality with which Hitler tried to conquer Europe, hoping against hope that Hitler would somehow lose.

If You Enjoyed the Recent, In the Garden of Beasts
I think you will enjoy journalist William L Shirer's Berlin Diary. Shirer lived in Europe and spent much of his time in Germany documenting the Nazi's rise to power and the beginning of World War II. Shirer is said to have gone back and put his notes in diary form so as to make them more accessible and it was a good decision. This book gives you a "you are there" perspective of an Europe at peace and of a madman named Hitler leading the world to disaster.
Shirer would later become famous as the author of the classic, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.

Shirer's Diary Puts You In Wartime Berlin.
Shirer's Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is considered the seminal work on Hitler's Germany. This diary, which Shirer kept while living the 1930's and early 40's in Berlin is remarkable for his daily insights and perception as Hitler, slowly at first, gained ever-increasing courage as he was enabled by the Euro powers.
Through his descriptions of wartime Berlin and the invasions of Belgium and France while traveling with the German infantry, he puts you in the middle of this world-changing armageddon.
