Featuring soprano Emily Workman in the role of the Governess, tenor Eric Barry as Peter Quint, soprano Kathleen Reveille as Miss Jessel, and mezzo-soprano Diana Montague as Mrs. Grose, with soprano Rosie Lomas and treble Dominic Lynch as the children, Flora and Miles, the opera receives a straightforward concert presentation that results in beautifully recorded singing but adversely affects the emotional interactions of the characters. Comparisons with Britten's own 1954 recording may be inevitable, and because it is a technically superior recording, this Dux release may hold appeal for modern listeners, even though the performance lacks the oppressive atmosphere and occasional frissons that make the original recording so memorable.
