Formatted in a conversational, question-and-answer style, Bill DeMain's survey of some of the best songwriters of recent generations starts out with a simple question: How does a song get written? The methods employed by DeMain's over 40 interviewees, who range from Burt Bacharach to XTC's Andy Partridge, are as many and varied as their musical styles. Partridge labels himself an unapologetic imitator, while Bacharach composes tunes in his head, and the workmanlike Billy Joel avoids writing songs altogether unless he has an album to do. DeMain is a songwriter himself, having collaborated with artists such as Amy Rigby and Marshall Crenshaw, and his curiosity about the workaday habits of his peers is palpable. Although it's obvious from the many approaches discussed in BEHIND THE MUSE that there's no single formula for writing a song, this fascinating glimpse into the working methods of these successful practitioners of the art does much to demystify the composing process--as well as revealing that a piece's origins can even be mysterious to its creator.
