This book is not simple. Despite its claim to be a beginning course, it requires some previous understanding of a language's structure. Obviously, Ancient Greek does require a modicum of commitment, yet the book should be marketed by honestly stating that this is not a course for the average man. Still, I will enjoy the challenge even though it will take much longer than I had been led to believe.

If you're like me and have finally decided to get serious about mastering ancient Greek, along the way trying numerous highly recommended resources, you'll find this small book a treasure. Everything here is direct and to the point. The examples are meaningful and clear. Paradigms are presented so well that the efforts of others seem almost criminal by comparison (that's an attempt at humor -- shortcomings in someone's pedagogy don't make them a felon). Most importantly the material is interesting enough to hold the attention of even the most jaded learner. That last is the result of using Homeric Greek as the basis for the course. Even those living in the Golden Age wanted to read Homer! The answer keys are a real help for those of us learning on our own and make the book even more valuable.
If I had started out with this book 10 or 15 years ago I could have avoided a lot of pain. Anyone starting out now should go directly to this book so they can enjoy the experience of learning Greek rather than enduring it as some form of torture.
