These live Beethoven recordings were made in 2015, during stints that presumably served as auditions for the conductor. They offer both hope and testimony to the long road ahead. These are Beethoven recordings in the George Szell mold, even if the Philharmonic is in a league at this point with Szell's crisp Cleveland Orchestra: they are light, studious in their avoidance of bombast and sentiment, and most at home where a small detail can push the music in a new direction.
