Now, the group is back with what's apparently the beginning of a full Beethoven quartet cycle, offering the first three quartets from the composer's Op. 18 set of six. As previously, the group uses gut strings and instruments from around Beethoven's time; the sound gives a physicality that fits the quartet's aims well. The Chiaroscuro lives up to its name with high-contrast performances that are full of surprises. Other performances add storm and stress to these early Beethoven works, but the Chiaroscuro does equally well with a lighter touch at conveying the sense of the young composer straining at the boundaries of Classical form.
