Indeed, his performances fall straight into the Russian tradition, with tumultuous virtuosity, murky gloom, and heated lyricism. Listeners may find things to like or not like, but they should persist through the whole thing, for Lugansky gets better and better as he goes along. His "Moonlight" Sonata (the Piano Sonata No. 14 in C sharp minor, Op. 27, No. 2) is slow, heavily pedaled, flexible in tempo. Perhaps he loads more onto the music than was there in 1801, but if Lugansky makes Beethoven sound like Chopin here, the "Appassionata" (the Piano Sonata No. 23 in F sharp minor, Op. 57), is Beethoven as Liszt or Tchaikovsky, large-boned, brilliant, and building toward a finale that is exceptionally powerful.
