Kuerti's technique combined with what is probably more the engineering of the recording than the sound of the instrument makes these sonatas have a flattened, less bright sound than you would expect. Sonata No. 28 in particular is more subdued than the Hammerklavier. Kuerti follows Beethoven's tempo markings quite precisely, so the opening of No. 28 really is "somewhat lively and with the most intimate feeling," and the final movement is not too quick and is full of quiet determination. Throughout, his phrasing is full of feeling and imagination, and the sonata is more thoughtful and careful than the Hammerklavier.
