This is a highly readable account of James Madison's role at Virginia's convention to ratify the Constitution in 1788. His work there paved the way for ratification throughout the young nation. Madison worked tirelessly toward this end, while dealing with several physical ailments as well as anxiety attacks. His childhood is briefly covered, as well as his remaining years to his death. The political forces of the young nation continue today, with inequality of wealth, and powerful forces fighting for their narrow interests. Patrick Henry comes off badly. I'm not a history buff, yet I enjoyed this work immensely.
