This is the story of Cassandra Becket (Ainsley Becket's only natural child) and Courtland Becket (Ainsley's 2nd eldest adopted child). From the time of Cassandra's birth, Courtland has felt responsible for her, as well as the entire Becket clan, but Cassandra in particular, as she was given into his care by her mother just moments before she died. Cassandra has been in love with Court since she was a child and, as she grew into a young woman, was always trying to get him to notice her as more than just a pest. He also started having feelings for her and tried his darnest to push her away. He kept trying to convince himself he was just her brother and shouldn't be feeling about her the way he was...but in the end he succumbed. This book wraps up the entire story of the Becket family and naturally the defeat of their enemy, Edmund (Every story has to have a happy ending after all - at least is should!). The ending between Odette and her twin Loringa was very anti-climatic. There is a feeling of loss when you finish this book - if you have read the entire series from beginning to end - and I was sorry to have the story of the family end. Despite a few of the books being so-so, this series is definitely worth the effort in finding the books and the time to read them. It's actually nice that these were "older" books and therefore I didn't have to wait in order for each book to come out before reading them. I read them all in succession and it was a nice couple of weeks spent in escapism. The Romney Marsh series in order: A Gentleman By Any Other Name, The Dangerous Debutante, Beware of Virtuous Women, A Most Unsuitable Groom, A Reckless Beauty, Return of the Prodigal and Becket's Last Stand.
