Andrew Wilson presents many varying opinions and a wealth of interesting material about the fascinating and reclusive Highsmith. I'll always revere her for giving us the diabolical Monsieur Tom - that is Tom Ripley and her views of Europe through the eyes of an ex- patriate. It seems to me that at times Highsmith's dark, dark sense of humor may have been misunderstood and that she showed much bravery in her personal life.If at all her later works were not as superb, it may be because as Somerset Maughm put it," only the mediocre arealways at theirbest."
