Not illustrated. 1896 Excerpt: ...fe" naving penetrated well into the enemy's W line. Norfolk had also perished, as also had Lord Ferrers, Sir Robert Brakenbury, Sir Richard RadclifFe, and Sir Robert Percy. Catesby, Surrey, and Northumberland were taken prisoners, and it may be remarked that the men commanded by the last named left the field without having joined at all in the combat. On the field and in the pursuit, a pursuit which lasted for a couple of miles, a considerable number perished, but accounts vary, so that it is difficult to estimate either the total number engaged or the number of those who fell. Probably, including the force of Sir William Stanley, Henry had between 4,500 and 5,000 men engaged. Of Richard's army we can only say that it considerably exceeded this in size. It has been estimated as amounting to 10,000 men; this would, we think, include the forces both of Lord Stanley, Sir William, and Northumberland. Subtracting for these, the king may have had 6,500 at the very outside who fought at Bosworth Field. Sutton Cheney, near which Lord Stanley encamped, is a small but picturesque village. It possesses an interesting old manor house and a small church, near which, westward, traces of entrenchments are visible. East, and rather to the south of the village church, is a field known as "Dickon's Nook." Local tradition connects this spot with Bosworth Field, but erroneously. With far more probability the old well at the foot of Ambion Hill bears the name of King Richard's Well. This well has been covered over by a massive stone pyramid. On the inside there is a much mutilated, though comparatively modern, inscription. The name of Ambion, which belongs to both wood and hill, does not seem to be capable of any explanation. It is of greater antiquity, however, ...
