Now that Liz Phair has ditched her edgy attitude for safe, polished pop, Kelly Buchanan could be the right person to pick up the slack. Although essentially a singer/songwriter influenced by Joni Mitchell and PJ Harvey, Buchanan likes to rock out, something made clear on Bastard Daughter. That may bring someone like Avril Lavigne to mind, and at least a couple of Buchanan's songs sound ready for commercial radio, but her second album with a full band lacks the innocence and friendliness to be considered truly accessible. Aside from requisite songs about love such as "Letter in Your Mailbox," where she looks for acceptance from a lover, she's outspoken about topics pertaining to sex. The foul-mouthed "Body Bag" and the punk-paced "Piggyback Ann," whose title character is referred to as a "whore," are just two places where Buchanan isn't afraid to be controversial. For someone who supposedly explored Brazilian jungles solo, it would be a shame to see her compromise her artistic credibility if she signs to a major label. ~ Kenyon Hopkin, Rovi
