Barbarian Europe is one of twenty-one volumes in the Time-Life book series Great Ages of Man. Originally published in the 1960s, this series is a history of the world's cultures. This volume is an overview of the political, economic, and religious developments of the Early Middle Ages.
The opening chapters portray the crumbling of the Roman Empire and the migrations of the barbarians throughout Europe. Saint Benedict, Saint Boniface, Pope Gregory, Charles Martel, Charlemagne, Alfred the Great, and William the Conqueror are among the key people portrayed in the subsequent chapters; in fact, an entire chapter is devoted to the accomplishments of Charlemagne. Other topics discussed include monasticism, feudalism, the Viking invasions, and the economic transformation of Europe in the 11th century. A nod to the art and literature of the period is made with the numerous picture essays; Beowulf and The Song of Roland are briefly mentioned. The fusion of Roman culture, barbarian customs, and Christianity is a common theme in the book.
Author Gerald Simons has done a good job of portraying a chaotic yet significant period in world history. The succinct narrative, numerous maps, plentiful illustrations, and chronology in the appendix make this book ideal for readers looking for a concise history of the Early Middle Ages.
