This volume expounds the general theory of Banach algebras and shows how their topology is often determined by their algebraic structures. It synthesizes work in this area from the past 20 years, including many new and unpublished results, and probes the questions of when homomorphisms and derivations from Banach algebras are automatically continuous and seeks canonical forms for these maps. Many specific classes of Banach algebras are described, including function algebras, group algebras, algebras of perators, C*-algebras ...

Many specific classes of Banach algebras are described, including function algebras, group algebras, algebras of perators, C*-algebras, and radical Banach algebras. This is essential reading for anyone interested in Banach algebras as it interweaves algebra, functional analysis, complex analysis, set theory and logic.

["The book describes many specific classes of Banach algebras, including function algebras, group algebras, algebras of operators, C*=algebras, and radical Banach algebras; it is a compendium of results on these examples. The subject interweaves algebras, functional analysis, and complex analysis, and has a dash of set theory and logic; the background in all these areas is fully explained"-publisher's description]. Contents: Algebraic foundations--Foundations and ordered sets--Semigroups--Algebras, ideals, and fields--Modules and primitive ideals--Radicals and spectra--Polynomials and formal power series--Valuation algebras--Derivations--Cohomology--Invol and topological algebras--Introduction to normed algebras--Topological algebras--Spectra and Gel' fand theory--The functional calculus--Banach algebras of operators--Banach modules---Intertwining maps and derivations--Cohomology--Bounded approximate identities and factorization--Banach algebras with an involution--General theory--Group algebras--Commutative Banach algebras--Algebras of functions--Algebras of continuous functions--Uniform algebras--Algebras of differentiable and Lipschitz functions--Abelian group algebras--Banach algebras of power series--Convolution algebras on the real line--Prime ideals.., .
I recommend this book highly if you need a full account of facts about Banach algebras. Also covers some related set theory, needed for automatic continuity theory. Highly technical. Found myself looking up symbols in the index a lot. Once familiar with his symbology, the reading goes a lot faster.
