During China's Cultural Revolution, two young men, whose parents are denounced as class enemies, are sent to the countryside for reeducation. They toil perilously in a mine, are entranced by the lovely daughter of a tailor, and discover their friend Four-Eyes' secret cache of Western literature. Living in a house on stilts on Phoenix Mountain, they experience a rebirth of sorts like the mythical bird.
As the title implies, this compact novel is about the imaginative power of literature and storytelling, and "human desires and true emotions" that transgress a repressive politics, adolescent initiations into love and loss. It has the charm, humor and privation of a fable. Translated from the French, Dai Sijie's limpid, evocative prose compels the reader's attention to the fate of these two orphaned characters in a harsh, strange world. A small gem.
