It will attract wind players through the exceptionally precise wind playing of Calefax in general and through the presence of the highly unusual lupophone, a sort of bass oboe (listen to the 14 Canons after the ground from the Goldberg Variations, BWV 1087). There is the question of whether violence is done to Bach's music by arranging it for instruments that did not exist in his own time. Listeners will have their own answers, but the wind ensemble perhaps is preferable to the heterogeneity of orchestral versions: the winds clarify the complex polyphony without inserting their own timbres into the dialogue.
