When the recording was made, Yu was fresh from an engagement singing in Peter Sellars' production of Mozart's Zaïde; she also draws from her experiences singing J.S. Bach in making this disc. It's a slim portfolio, but Yu does it all a lot of justice; her voice is sweet, pristine, and transparently clear. What she has, though, in mind-boggling quantity, is breath -- she winds effortlessly through the long melismas in "Ruhe sanft, mein holdes Leben" from Zaïde and never seems to need to come up for air. Yu's voice is very soft focused and never seems to have a hard edge, even when singing rapid, difficult passagework.The recording is not quite what it should be -- although the spotlight is rightfully placed on the singer, the orchestral accompaniment is distant and hard to make out at times.
