The performances on this two-CD budget-price set from EMI are classics of the English choral sound, but the music included is a bit of a mishmash. The Choir of King's College, Cambridge, with its 16 adult male and boy choristers, recorded often during the directorship of Sir David Willcocks, and this set includes selections from their several Bach recordings. There is a lovely reading of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, BWV 147, which (twice) includes the familiar chorale setting known in the English-speaking world as "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." It's a great cantata to hear in full, for the pastoral triplets of that chestnut crop up in other movements as well. The orchestral accompaniment is by the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and the all-star soloist group (Elly Ameling, Janet Baker, Ian Partridge, and John Shirley-Quirk) is superb. A large group of paired chorales and chorale preludes (played by Willcocks on the organ) rounds out the first CD. The preludes follow the chorales...
