Among other points, he notes that "Bach's music was ideal for a concert-less world, since much of it was neither written for nor dependent upon an audience: in fact, silence often more naturally follows a Bach work than applause." He had never recorded Bach or performed him much, but he strikes a nice interior note in the French Overture, BWV 831, that opens the program, landing between pianistic and harpsichord-on-the-piano Bach and bringing out a bit of playfulness that fits well with the French style of the work.
