From Rio de Janeiro to Bahia, the samba beat is the common ground that unites Brazilians musically (which isn't to overlook the richness of a non-samba style like forro). Go to Rio, Bahia, Brasilia and Sao Paulo, and you'll hearing a variety of things done with the samba. The state of Bahia is where Afro-Brazilian culture is the most prominent, and that rich culture's approach to samba is the focus of this rewarding compilation. Axe Brasil boasts exuberant songs by such greats as Simone ("To Voltando"), Gonzaguinha ("Tanacara") and Dorival Caymmi ("Canto De Nana"). Even if a particular artist hasn't spend his or her entire life in Bahia, the Bahian influence is there. Gonzaguinha, in fact, is actually from Rio, but "Tanacara" is an ode to Afro-Bahian accomplishments. Quite appropriately, the CD contains no less than four songs by the late Clara Nunes, one of the most revered figures in the history of Afro-Brazilian music. A very wide variety of influences can be heard on Axe Brasil. For the artists of Bahia and their supporters, everything from reggae to soca to zouk and soukous can be a source of inspiration. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi
