"Amid this stream of abolitionist tirades are a few references to wartime hospitals at the front and behind the lines."-Nevins II, page 130. Lawrence was an ardent abolitionist and temperane worker. She labored as a nurse during the civil war and wrote this book to supplement her $12 monthly pension.
