Authentic Belly Dance Music, on the Laserlight label (a sub-label of Delta), is this album of belly dancing music, on the deep-discount end of the spectrum. The music is somewhat discounted as well, unfortunately. The tunes come from around the North African world, presumably, but are given a somewhat lazy rendering by the songstress and chorus. The instrumental accompaniment is rather better, but is still hit and miss. The affair sounds distinctly as though the focus is on exoticism rather than quality, almost directly out of a theme restaurant. Although most typical of Islamic North Africa, Belly Dance Music is representative of the entire Moslem world. It has its origins in the folk songs of the roving Bedouin tribes, and in the music of the early camelherders, with their faint pipes and primitive instruments. The Arab conquest of North Africa and the assimilation of the savage Berber tribes introduced the wild polyrhythmic drumbeat rhythm. The oriental influence stems from the transmigration of culture brought about by the great caravan routes to China and India. The development of music amongst the Arabs reached its height in the luxury of the tenth century, the golden age of Moslem culture.
This CD will appeal to those who want genuine Middle East ethnic folk sound and Arab songs.
