Our book club really enjoyed this one! If you are a Jane Austen fan, you must read this book. Delightfully written. Just enough sarcasm. I love the way Shannon Hale writes!

Delightful
I read this novel in one sitting, it's that delightful (and slim). Hale has a great sense of comedy, and of comedic timing. I identified (far too much!) with the heroine and her love-lorn plight. The idea of a Regency vacation sucked me right in (as it might for anyone who enjoys both the BBC/PBS historical immersion shows, and Georgette Heyer novels). Hale portrays Jane's journey of discovery from fantasy to reality quite believably, however fantastical the setting. The copy I purchased has a reading group guide, which might be pushing it unless you have the right kind of group. Highly recommended for Austen freaks, Heyer devotees, and all worshipers of Colin Firth's Darcy.

Best Austen Made Modern
I'm not much for chick-lit, so I went into this with much misgiving. However, I was happily surprised at the wit and understanding of Austen's writing style that Hale displays. In the closed society of Austenland, Jane (the modern day heroine) not only learns about how stifling the life of women were in Regency England but also more about herself and what she wants out of life. Along the way she interacts with a humorous group of minor characters, outsmarts two characters who mean her harm, and becomes a sympathetic, likable young woman who's been looking for love in all the wrong places. This is a truly delightful look at what it would be like to be an Austen heroine searching for the perfect Mr. Darcy.
