It's doubtful whether the latter would be achievable within the confines of an ordinary CD release, and Beatson has absolutely come up with pieces that have something to say to one another. There are pieces from Vienna itself but also views from abroad, from Schumann in the Faschingsschwank aus Wien and Ravel in the Valses nobles et sentimentales. There is indeed a playful spirit in Schumann's Faschingsschwank aus Wien, where Beatson's playing is perhaps too restrained for the theme, but also, when placed in this context, from Schoenberg's Sechs kleine Klavierstücke, Op. 19, atonal...
