August Descending is a timely look at modern education through the eyes of Mike August, a teacher who has seen most of it. August's voice is contemporary, sardonic, and funny with a Jimmy Fallon-Ricky Gervais irreverence. His situation is the universal one of growing older and the quest to remain relevant. In attempting to redeem himself, improve his six mentees, and keep his job, August struggles with feelings of inadequacy and self doubt. The scenes and situations lean heavily on the classroom and school environments and portray such contemporary issues as ADHD, potential gun violence, sex, pregnancy, dropping out, the pressures to excel, political correctness, the teacher as counselor, sexual harassment, budget constraints, union business, etc. Though the novel is a first person narration, there are many point-of-view shifts accomplished through the insertion of italicized sections.
