The inspiration becomes shorter, the expiration shorter, and the rate more rapid. The respiration may be slightly inhibited. Variations are possible, both in the rate and depth of the respirations. (b) Vasoconstriction. When the volume of the hand or finger is measured during attention, it usually shows a decrease due to a sympathetic constriction of the peripheral arteries. Such constriction may be slowly succeeded by a gradual dilation of the arteries to the normal.
