In addition to the initial emergency response, the book relates the state of emergency planning and training in Washington, DC, at the time, among both military and civilian facilities; the roles of the various military and civilian medical teams and facilities; casualty recovery and identification; and the short and long-term occupational and mental health responses, for victims, families, and responders. Also included is a chapter on the response at ground zero in New York City. The book then analyses successes and shortcomings of the response, including lessons learned and resulting developments in emergency preparedness.
