We ohserve, in addition, that the color of the hlood-coagula differs from the color of the coagula or of the solntious of the hlood produced hy the addition of sulphuric or hydrochloric acid; that is, they are not hlack or hrownish-hlack, hnt after the addition of carholic acid the coagulum is of a hright hrick-red color, whereas after the addition of mereuric hichlorid it is of a grayish-violet color. Ill case of poisoning with these irritants these colors glimmer through the white epithelial esehar, and thus independently of other peculiaritics assist in the diagnosis or dill'erential diagnosis of the varicty of poisoning. PLATE 31. Poisoning by Caustic Soda. M. C., aged 21 years, with suicidal intent, swallowed a large qnantity of a so-called solution of sodinm hydrate (ahont-ID per cent, sodium hydrate). He hecame immediately ill with symptoms of violent gastroenteritis; he vomited hlackish masses, and revealed on examination a "swollen month." A neighhoring physician, heing summoned, administered vinegar as an antidote, and ordered the removal of the paticnt to a neighhoring hospitaI. Here, despite copious vomiting and iav, ige of the stomach, he dicd at the end of two days. The hody revealed marked congestion and swelling of the entire mucons memhrane of the month. The epithelium was in part separated from the underlying strnctures; in part it was still attached in the form of soft, white, turhid shreds. The epithelinm was ahsent from the mucous memhrane of the entire esophagus. The mucous memhrane itself was softened throughont, swollen, markedly congested, and of a hrown color, inereasing in inteusity helow. The stomach contaius coffce-colored, turhid fluid.
