The deputy-governor, greatly alarmed by Marcel's menaces, has pretended a pilgrimage in order to settle the affairs pending between him and the director of the mission. The funds deposited with him will be immediately handed over to us. All is very well that does not end too badly. April 23d.--The green of the plain has become yellow, the herbs bear thorns instead of flowers, the chain of the Bakhtiaris shows rose-colored crests where interminable glaciers extended. It seems as if nature entire had gone through the furnace in eight days. After the disappearance of the last snows, Susa will become uninhabitable. The mutawallT will close the door of the tomb and take refuge in his serdab (vault) at Dizful; the nomads will come nearer to the mountain or will camp on the banks of a river; wild beasts and boars, after the example of man, will become amphibious; only the serpents, the scorpions and monstrous spiders will frequent the tumuli. The stings of summer will kill even the insects which take turns in torturing us. Why do they not revenge us on the pilgrims? The flies live in such numerous legions, that helmets and clothes seem as if covered with a carapace of black jet; the mosquitos are armed with such sharp stings, that they pierce the clothes after having passed through the canvas of the camp-stools, and do not leave their victims the leisure to sit down.
